Do Not Be Afraid, Just Have Faith!

Holy Week Day of Reflection

Fear.  It can be overwhelming.  It’s sometimes paralyzing. We ought not be surprised that one of the most often repeated commands in Scripture is: Don't be afraid!  In older translations, it’s sometimes translated: Fear not!  Fear of the unknown, fear of complications, fear of dying and death, fear of a person, fear of a circumstance, fear of the unknown, fear of what we cannot control, and a host of other fears can come crashing down on us in times of stress, danger, and uncertainty.

The great heroes of faith faced moments of fear.  God guided them through their fears.  Jesus tells his disciples and others not to be afraid, to put aside our fears and trust God. So it oughtn’t be surprising that at the announcement of his conception would come with the command to the Blessed Mother that she shouldn't be frightened and the assurance that she doesn't need to be frightened.  And at the tomb, the angel said to the women: ‘Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.’

As we come to end of our Lenten journey for this year, let’s ask God to make the assurance of Jesus not to fear in our life and to have that assurance squash out the forces of fear in our heart.
