A Brief History of San PEdro Center
Orlando began as a part of the Diocese of St. Augustine. In 1955, Bishop Hurley purchased a large parcel of land on Lake Howell. The place was named Camp San Pedro after the Spanish explorer, Don Pedro Menendez, who frequented the St. Augustine area in 1565. Fr. Hubert Reason was appointed first director of the camp and under his leadership the Bunk Houses and Main Hall were constructed. A youth camp was instituted. In the late 50's when the Castro revolution took place, the buildings were used to house Cuban refugees. When they left, San Pedro again became a youth camp.
When Bishop Thomas Grady was appointed Bishop of the Orlando Diocese in November, 1974, he appointed a task force to study the feasibility of a center for spiritual development. Out of ten possible sites, San Pedro was chosen by the Diocesan Pastoral Council and was approved by the Bishop in November, 1976. Shortly thereafter, the dormitories, pavilion, main hall and kitchen were modernized. At that time, Msgr. Caverly, then Secretary of Spiritual Development in the diocese, recommended that Bishop Grady invite the Franciscan Friars, T.O.R., to administrate and staff the proposed center.
In February 1979, a new residence/administration building was built and the Franciscan staff arrived. In May of 1982, plans for building the conference facilities were under way and construction had begun. The facilities were completed in September 1983, including three conference buildings and three sleeping room facilities totaling 48 bedrooms. In March 1984 Bishop Grady formally dedicated the new building and "Camp San Pedro" was renamed "San Pedro Center". In 1987 plans were made to erect a chapel, administration building and expansion of Building 300 for more dining space. The expansion project was completed in October, 1991. Mary Mother of God Chapel, donated by the parishes of the diocese to honor retiring Bishop Thomas Grady, was dedicated in February, 1992. In October 1992 the cemetery for priests and bishops of the diocese was dedicated.

The Closer Walk
A 1/3-mile walk designed to bring you closer to peace. Starting with a gated entrance by the St. Thomas Aquinas Conference (Building 500) and ending with a mini-dock by the lake, the closer walk will give you an opportunity and space to meditate, enjoy the quiet and reflect. Please be careful when on the closer walk. We do our best to maintain the path as much as possible, however there may be loose slats or tree branches. If during your walk you observe anything needing maintenance, please let us know.
Walking the Labyrinth
Walking a labyrinth is a simple whole-body prayer, reconnecting you with your internal rhythm, your highest wisdom and the Source of All That Is.
Walking the Labyrinth
Walk at your own pace.
There may be two-way traffic. Cooperate with others.
It is OK to pass others, or to be passed. This is done best at the turns.
Be aware of your experience, your body, your thoughts and feelings.
Pause in the center if you wish to pray there.
Return by the same path you entered or, if you choose, walk directly out.
Upon exiting, turn and again acknowledge the labyrinth.
After leaving the Labyrinth
Continue to be aware of your labyrinth experience.
Take a moment to sit quietly and reflect on your walk.
You may wish to journal or draw to express your experience.
Thank yourself for the gift you have given yourself.
Walk the labyrinth again, as many times as you wish.
Tell friends of your experience and invite them to come and walk.
The labyrinth is not a maze: There are no dead-ends. It is a meandering but purposeful path, a walking meditation. To Artress, it is a “blueprint for the sacred meeting of psyche and soul, a watering hole for the human spirit,” a devotional tool with potential for healing and confronting.
Our path in life is given to us; freedom comes from how we choose to walk it. People may walk the labyrinth out of curiosity, to calm themselves or to celebrate life. Each person’s experience is unique. There are, however, gifts for all who enter. What gifts might the labyrinth hold for you?
Stations of the Cross and St. Francis Prayer Corner
On the North side of our property, you can truly immerse yourselves in the beauty of nature. In addition to the beautiful trees on the property, we have Stations of the Cross, which were handcrafted by patrons of San Pedro Center. We also have a prayer corner with a statue of Saint Francis of Assisi.
Prayer of Saint Francis of ASsisi
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to console;
To be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.
We hope you have enjoyed your accommodations here at San Pedro Center. We work hard to create a peaceful and restful environment for all our guests.
